The starting point for a scenario analysis of net-zero targets is the current energy system, characterized by the large role of petroleum for liquid fuels; significant use of natural gas across the economy; a mix of coal, natural gas, nuclear, and renewables providing electric generation; and a roughly 20% share of electricity in final energy (Figure 14). The “current” data point shown here and in figures throughout the report is based on 2022 as reported by the EIA and other sources.
